Autocar Type U

1939 - 1940

Autocar provided number of tankers and wreckers to the US Navy on their Model U70 chassis of 1939-40. Those trucks were still heavily chromed, as many trucks were just prior to WW2. A 106 horsepower six-cylinder engine provided power.

As World War II approached, several 10-ton 6×4 type trucks were purchased to perform heavy chores, primarily on hard surfaces where maximum traction was not required. A large fleet of such Autocar U-9064s were put into the US Navy’s vehicle fleet, primarily as a refueling tankers with 1,610 gallon (ca. 6 m³) capacity.

Built around 1940, they saw service at Navy facilities all over the world. Completely equipped with pumps and hoses for quick discharge, they were adequately powered by a six-cylinder in-line L-head gasoline engine and rode on 9.75×24 tires and a 155-inch wheelbase.
