Autocar A64B Show Truck

1970 - 1970

A new 12,400 pounds (5.62 t) tractor for truck shows has been introduced in 1970, incorporating a wide-range of industry innovations. Called the “quiet, cool one,” the A64B show truck tractor features over-size radiator, internally mounted air conditioner, sound-proof cab, computer controlled brakes and electronic speedometer and tachometer.

The extra-large radiator has 1440 square inches (0.93 m²) of frontal area and was engineered to assure adequate cooling for all types of power. The Kysor-built air-con-ditioner has been moved inside the cab to eliminate drafts from outside top mountings. The two-speed unit provides both heat and cooling. Autocar says outside noise levels are reduced through the use of polyurethane foam faced with vinyl in the cab interior.

The manufacturer has also installed a computer-operated brake control system made by the Gunite division of Kelsey-Hayes Co. The system monitors braking action, and provides automatic control for each wheel when overbraking occurs.

Both speedometer and tachometer are produced by Mechanex Corp. and are electronically operated, sending electronic pulses from the wheel hub to the recording head. Autocar says the tractor is capable of hauling gross combination weights up to 73,280 pounds. Other specifications include a 156-inch wheelbase, Cummins V-903 engine and a Fuller RT-909A transmission.
